SAEPA’s second “Speed in a Suit” Challenge a great success

13 August 2018

The eighteen intrepid drivers competed in a race around the dynamic handling circuit at Kyalami in the Fiat Doblo to see who could achieve the time closest to the benchmark set by MasterDrive. Cartrack, the telematics sponsor, was there to monitor harsh braking and cornering which also affected the final score. The event is specifically designed for guests to show off their driving skills by achieving the quickest and safest time while using the least amount of fuel.

The Managing Director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says each driver was committed to not only achieving the fastest lap time but driving safely as well. “There were no incidents, which is impressive, considering each driver only had a single lap to perfect their efforts. It also created an opportunity for the competitors to better understand what is required of their courier drivers when making deliveries.”

The enthusiasm that each participant and facilitator put into the event did not go unnoticed. “With the time demands and pressure each of us faces in our daily lives, taking a moment from your limited time to participate,is difficult. Despite this, this is exactly what everyone did and all involved were well rewarded for their efforts”.

After the competition was complete, participants also had the opportunity to enjoy a hot lap around the track with Herbert which generated a fair amount of excitement.

A first for this year’s competition was a recording of the event. For those who could not watch the competition at the track, Cartrack had a large screen displaying footage from two camera video systems inside the venue. Live Vision camera footage was streamed from the Fiat Doblo on the Cartrack exhibition stand, providing a practical and live demonstration of the product. The footage was also provided to each of the contestants as a keepsake of the event and to show off their skills to friends and family.

For SAEPA and their members this was the crowning highlight of the popular TruckX 2018 Conference and Expo for the commercial vehicle sector. Fiat, who sponsored the vehicles, set up a VIP tent on the track, saw that contestants were well-fed and watered and produced a prestigious trophy. It was an excellent opportunity for SAEPA’s members to test-drive their vehicles and engage with FIAT executives.

The winner of this year’s challenge was Stevan Saffy, Managing Executive of RTT Intelligent Logistics, who took the prestigious FIAT trophy, a hamper from CarTrack and return air tickets for two within South Africa sponsored by Bidair Cargo. Mark Scott Founder/Director of NGL Logistics Solutions and Eddie Vosloo, Managing Director of Globeflight Worldwide Express SA came in a creditable second and third respectively.

SAEPA wishes to thank John Thomson of S A Trade Promotions who came up with the idea for Speed in a Suit, developed the concept with Garry Marshall, took charge of organising the event and worked tirelessly to bring such highly compatible sponsors together.

What a fantastic event for our industry, we really got a chance to have fun, catch-up and share war stories with colleagues and friends. The challenge was very safe and fair; it gave everyone an equal opportunity to match the predetermined “ideal time” set (without incurring too many penalties). It was great to see the function being so well attended by all the major players in our industry,” concludes Garry

Following the conclusion of another successful event, a third Speed in a Suit is sure to take place. “We look forward to the event next year and an opportunity to continue making it even better,” says Herbert.
